The Tall Grass Kitchens Garden Lot is a companion project to the nearby Watershed Row development, transforming an abandoned community garden into a productive urban space that supports a local circular economy. Designed to grow food for the community—not just in it—the site includes a greenhouse, market garden, and orchard, all contributing fresh produce to the food hub at Watershed Row.
The garden fulfills the Urban Agriculture Imperative of the Living Building Challenge through scale jumping, leveraging its relationship with the adjacent site to meet regenerative food production goals. Along 6th Street, edible plants line the garden’s edge, while a gabion wall—integrated with bench seating—invites passersby to pause, improving walkability and connection to the streetscape.
The project also prioritizes closed-loop systems and resource efficiency. Green waste from Watershed Row’s eateries will be composted on-site, and excess rainwater and greywater from the adjacent development will irrigate new crops—minimizing waste while nurturing growth.
By linking food, water, and community in a single landscape, the Tall Grass Kitchens Garden Lot demonstrates what’s possible when regenerative design principles take root at the neighborhood scale.
