The Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE) is a federally funded initiative advancing regional innovation through sustainability-driven industries. As one of the first Regional Innovation Engines supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the SWSIE is led by Arizona State University and spans Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

Rooted in the region’s urgent environmental challenges—prolonged drought, extreme heat, and shrinking water supplies—the Engine positions these threats as opportunities for building long-term resilience. Its focus areas include carbon capture, renewable energy, and water security, with the aim of fostering high-wage jobs and inclusive economic growth.

This cross-sector collaboration unites academic institutions, nonprofits, community organizations, and industry leaders. Core partners include Arizona State University (Lead), University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of Utah, Desert Research Institute, the Water Research Foundation, SciTech Institute, and Maricopa Community Colleges.

Place Collaborative helped shape the Engine’s approach to engagement—ensuring that local voices, equity-centered practices, and public benefit are embedded from the start. Through careful planning and relationship-building, the Engine reflects a shared commitment to sustainable innovation and lasting impact.

  • "ASU secured this award because of the support of Place Collaborative. We are deeply appreciative of your dedication to SWSIE and for your partnership with ASU on this remarkable achievement."
