The highly sustainable Draper Recreation Center is the second Gold LEED Recreation Center in the State of Utah. This Center was added to the site directly north of the existing outdoor Draper Swimming Pool. The design of the facility included the ability to incorporate the exterior pool into the new interior aquatic elements, creating a year-round amenity for users. The facility also includes seating for indoor swim meets and a water slide and play amenities for the indoor leisure pool. The center also was the first county facility to fully address neutral change rooms, by innovating the patron shower and locker experience.
The “dry” side of the facility includes a field house with wall-to-wall turf, and includes drop down batting cages. A large fitness room includes both strength and cardio equipment, with amazing views of the entire valley. A fitness classroom includes a drop-down screen for digital as well as in-person fitness classes. A large conference room that can be converted into two party rooms is accessed directly from the lobby in a “pre-pay” location. A drop-in child care center is also available for users of the facility.
The team worked diligently to orient the building to leverage great views, optimal heating and cooling measures, and incorporated photochromatic glazing at the indoor pools to minimize glare. The team also looked at ways to minimize energy consumption and was able to offset peak load usage with the installation of a photovoltaic array.
